I wonder... #12
Do all relationships end solely because of the unrelenting selfishness of at least one of the persons involved in a given relationship? Can all disagreements/'problems' in a relationship be resolved if those involved are willing to be selfless and sacrificial in their love toward one another? Could you hypothetically marry anyone you start to date if you are just willing to be shaped into Christ's likeness in the context of that relationship? Yet, if the answer is 'yes,' does that mean that all breakups are akin to saying, "No, I do not want to learn to love you selflessly"? Would it ever be right to end a relationship? But if some relationships do not end as a result of unrelenting selfishness, what is the cause?

i think it's less a matter of selfishness and more a matter of calling. yeah, we can always learn to get over our selfishness, but we can do this outside romantic relationships as well - where do you draw the line? are you supposed to be friends with everyone just so you can learn to put up with their crap? why not date and marry anyone just because you know how to put up with crap? because God doesn't put us here to learn how to deal with crap - other people's problems, our problems, all selfishness - but to seek and glorify Him. relationships end when people realize they are called to different places, different things, different paths of life. what are you called to? where are you called to? is having to "learn to love selflessly" distracting from loving and following God completely? as you walk towards God, where are you headed, and is the person at your side going with you? a helpmate is meant to push you forwards closer to God and not to hold you back in some strange space however slightly more far away from Him. i'm sure you CAN learn to love them selflessly, but are you supposed to? you will never know unless you are asking God and listening to His answer.
Christlikeness = following God completely. Matthew 6:33. to seek God is to selflessly love others.
